University of Louisville distance swimmer Shane Lichtenberg was invited the the National Open Water Select Camp. Lichtenberg, a junior-to-be from Clarkston, Michigan, holds all three Cardinal records in distance events and is the former BIG EAST Champion in the 1650-free.
"Being selected to The National Open Water Select Camp is a great honor for Shane and for the UofL Swimming Program, " said U of L head coach Arthur Albiero. "It is also a reward for his performances last summer, and I believe this experience will set him up for new levels of performance."
This June, USA Swimming will sponsor The National Open Water Select Camp. USA Swimming seeks to identify the best distance swimmers, offering them a unique motivational and educational experience. The National Open Water Camp is viewed as an integral step for athletes to move from the pool to Open Water, then to the International scene. Just 12 male and 12 female athletes were selected off of the top times in the Swims database in the 1500 meter freestyle.
In addition, he and teammate Amanda Henleben will compete on June 12 in the 2009 5K Open Water National Championships in Ft. Myers, Fla.
Amanda, who hails from Roswell, Ga. is U of L's female distance expert who holds the school record in the 1650.
"Amanda will be participating in the 5K race, and even though she is a rookie at open water events, based on the season she had this year, she could be in a great position to surprise the competition," said Albiero. S"he has become one of the toughest athletes I have coached, and this race will be a good challenge for her."
