Carlos Almeida qualified second in the 100-breast and Joao De Lucca qualified fourth in the 200-free to send two individuals to the A-finals after Day 2 prelims of the 2012 NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center on Friday.
The men's 200-medley relay will also swim in the A-finals and senior Brendon Andrews made the B-finals in the 100-back.
"We are battling and it is a game of hundreths as in one hundredth of a second. We are in three finals and one consols and 800 free relay so there are plenty of opportunities for us," said U of L head coach Arthur Albiero.
In the first event of the morning, the men's 200-medley relay qualified seventh with a time of 1:25.81 which is .16 faster than their qualifying time. Brendon Andrews led off with backstroke leg with a split of 21.60. Carlos Almeida was next in the water with the breaststroke split of 23.95. Fly specialist Tim Collins put up a 21.28 and Joao De Lucca anchored with a 18.98.
In the 400-IM prelims, Michael Pryor finished 23rd with a time of 3:51.10. In the 100-fly prelims, Tim Collins posted a time of 48.50 to finish 40th.
In the 200-free, Joao De Lucca, who had been seeded No. 1 in the nation, qualified fourth with a time of 1:34.14 to gain the A-finals. Alex Burtch finished seventh in his heat with a 1:37.44 and 37th overall. Albert Lloyd was 47th with a time of 1:39.62.
Carlos Almeida shaved two seconds from his qualifying time to put up the second fastest time in the 100-breast for a school record. His 51.85 ranks him second behind only Arizona's Kevin Cordes, who boarded a 51.32. Kameron Chastain was 23rd with a time of 53.82.
