Carlos Almeida became the first ever University of Louisville National Champion when he won the 200-breast in 1:51.88 at the 2012 NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships at Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way, Washington. The U of L team finished ninth in the 39 team field, the highest finish in school history.

Qualifying first, but in a three-way race down the stretch, Almeida outtouched Trevor Hoyt (1:51.97) of Cal and Kevin Cordes of Arizona (1:51.97). Almeida's time was the fourth fastest time in NCAA history.

"I just kept thinking about all the people who have supported me and I had to get into the wall for them," said Carlos Almeida. "I didn't want what happened yesterday to happen again when I was out-touched in the 100."

In the A-final of the 100-free, Joao De Lucca was seventh with a swim of 42.75.

In the final event of the meet, the men's 400-free relay, the U of L men finished ninth in 2:53.03. Brendon Andrews led off with a split of 44.51, followed by Caryle Blondell's 43.02. Samuel Hoekstra swam the third leg in 43.42 and Joao De Lucca anchored with a 42.08.
