Men's Swimming Uses Two Top Three Finishes to Move to Ninth at Day 2 of NCAAs

Using two top three finishes and scoring in relays, the University of Louisville men's swim team moved to ninth place in a 36 team field on Day 2 of the 2012 NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championship at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way, Washington.

In the 200-medley relay, U of L posted a time of 1:25.92 for seventh place. Brendon Andrews was first in the water with a backstroke split of 21.71. Carlos Almeida posted a breaststroke split of 23.73, before handing off to Tim Collins for the fly. Collins boarded a 21.52. Joao De Lucca anchored with a freestyle split of 18.96.

Sophomore Joao De Lucca finished third in the 200-free with a time of 1:33.49, a new school record and almost a second faster than his qualifying time.

Senior Carlos Almeida finished second in the 100-breast, the highest finish ever for a Cardinal. He posted a time of 51.58, just seven one-hundredths of a second from a national championship, which was won by Kevin Cordes of Arizona.

Brendon Andrews finished 16th in the 100-back with a time of 50.15 to help the Cardinal team total.

The Cardinal 800-free relay team put up a time of 6:28.68 to finish 14th. Alex Burtch led off with a 1:38.44 split. Joao De Lucca was second in with a split of 1:34.79. Albert Lloyd was third with a split of 1:38.33 with Michael Pryor anchoring with a 1:37.12.
