The University of Louisville won three events and the Cardinal women moved into first place with the U of L men in second after two days of competition at the BIG EAST Swimming and Diving Championships Thursday night at the Indiana University Natatorium on the campus of IUPUI in Indianapolis, Ind.
The women (332) lead Notre Dame (302), Pitt (188), Villanova (160), Rutgers (153.5), UConn (143), Cincinnati (117.5), Seton Hall (68), Georgetown (62), Providence (42). The men (224) trail only Notre Dame (367) and lead Pitt (191.5), UConn (167.5), Georgetown (101), Cincinnati (86), Villanova (79), Seton Hall (76) and Providence (61).
"We had a good session and so far in the meet we have set three school records including Tanja Kylliainen's 200-IM swim," said U of L head coach Arthur Albiero. "We have a lot of swimming left to do and our focus is now on tomorrow's prelims. Our sprinters delivered and we won the relays so we can take pride in that but keep the focus on the big picture."
In the first race of the evening session, Abby Chin was top Cardinal A-finalist in the 500-free with a fourth place time of 4:48.45, shaving nearly two seconds off her qualifying time. Carly Munchel was fifth with a time of 4:50.09 and Breann McDowell was eighth in 4:53.00. For the Cardinal men, Bryan Draganosky won the B-final with a time of 4:24.68 with Kevin Bandy touching 4:34.36 for sixth and Charlie Bolgan touching seventh with a time of 4:35.68.
In the women's 200-IM, it took a BIG EAST record to beat U of L's Tanja Kylliainen, who went 1:57.53 for second behind ND's Emma Reaney, who posted a 1:56.37. Belcher was third in 1:59.61 as the top three touched in under two minutes . For the men, Evan Noble was fourth in 1:47.06 and Tessone was 5th in 1:47.24.
Top-seeded Kelsi Worrell won the women's 50-free, going 22.62 as the freshman takes the crown. Krissie Brandenburg was second in 23.08, Grite Apanaviciute hit the wall fourth in 23.14 and Mittel was 6th in 23.37. On the men's side, in the hotly contested De Lucca was edged for second in 19.73by Notre Dame's Frank Dyer's 19.62. Caryle Blondell was third 19.97 and Hoekstra touched fourth in 20.07.
In W 1-meter: Hannah Gadd was fourth (289.15) and Lindsey Stephens was fifth with 270.20.
In the final event of the evening the Cards won the women's 200-free relay in 1:30.93. The Louisville foursome led wire-to-wire as Kelsi Worrell (22.98),Krissie Brandenburg 22:47, Mary Mittel 22.92 Grite Apanaviciute 22.56
The men's 200-free relay had to grit it out, not taking the lead until the third leg when Kameron Chastain surged into the lead, setting up anchor Samuel Hoekstra who held off a hard charging Irish team. The foursome Caryle Blondell (20.13), Joao De Lucca 19.29; Kameron Chastain (19.56) and Hoekstra (19.39) combined for a time of 1:18.37.
Prelims begin tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. back at the Indiana University Natatorium at IUPUI when the 400-IM, 100-fly, 200-free, 100-breast, 100-back, and men's 3-meter diving will be contested.
