Freshman: Tanja qualified to compete in the NCAA Championships, which were held in Auburn, Alabama. She competed in the 200- and 400- IM and 200-fly. In the 200-IM she placed 28th in 1:58.80 and in the 400-IM she placed 31st. She qualified for her first NCAA consolation final in the 200-fly where she finished 10th in 1:55.23. She was named an Honorable Mention All-American. Tanja competed in the 200-IM and 400-IM as well as the 200-butterfly at the BIG EAST championships. In the 200-IM, she finished second in a time of 1:59.72 and qualified for the national B-cut. She was the BIG EAST Champion in the 400-IM with a time of 4:10.40 and qualified for the national B-cut. In the 200-butterfly, she finished second in a school record time of 1:55.22 and qualified for the national B-cut. She was named an All-BIG EAST performer in all three of her individual events as well as being a member of the 400-medley relay. In the fall, Tanja competed for Finland at the European Short Course Championships where she finished tenth in the 400-IM and set a new Finnish national record. Tanja was awarded the Female Freshman of the Year at the All Sports Banquet alongside of starting quarterback Teddy Bridgewater and basketball star Chane Behannan as the male recipients.
Prep: Tanja Kylliainen, the Finnish national record-holder in the 400-meter IM (4:49.72), comes to Louisville from the Loyola Blakefield Aquatic Program and is coached by Keith Schertle. Tanja, a current USA 2012 Olympic Trial qualifier in the 200-meter butterfly (2:15.11) and 400-IM, holds dual citizenship with the United States and Finland. She has already been announced as a member of the Finnish 2011 World Championship Team, which will compete in Shanghai, China. Kylliainen is a sectional champion in the 400-IM and 200-fly.
