LOUISVILLE, Ky. -
The University of Louisville played host to its 15th annual Red and Black Honors Banquet and Scholar-Athlete Awards ceremony on Sunday night at Papa John's Cardinal Stadium in the Brown and Williamson Club.
A record-best 248 Cardinals, consisting of student-athletes, spirit squad members and team managers, were recognized for achieving at least a 3.25 cumulative grade-point average for all semesters at Louisville.
Elaine Wise, the university's faculty athletic representative, began the ceremony by welcoming the student-athletes and acknowledging professors, faculty and academic mentors for their hard work and dedication to Louisville's student-athletes.
Following opening remarks, Louisville mayor Greg Fischer was introduced as the guest speaker for the night. His topic of the night was based upon leadership in the community.
Once the student-athletes, team managers and spirit squad members were recognized, the final awards of the evening were announced.
Earning the outstanding senior awards, which recognizes the two senior scholar-athletes who have earned the highest GPA during their course of study at Louisville, were women's soccer's Katie Kuric and Shannon Leamy.
The next award was for the teams that earned the highest grade-point average for the preceding year (spring, summer and fall of 2010). On the men's side, the golf team collected the accolade, while the tennis team obtained the award on the women's side.
The last award of the night, the Cardinal Post Graduate Scholarship Award, was bestowed to women's track and field's Kim Grieshaber and Rachel Gehret. The award was contingent upon two seniors who plan to attend graduate or professional school.
