NEW YORK - University of Louisville track and field's Sam Bombaugh is the American Athletic Conference Institutional Male Scholar-Athlete award recipient, the league office announced. The senior is one of five earning the academic honor.
All nominees must have maintained both excellent academic credentials (minimum 3.0 cumulative grade-point average) and outstanding athletic performance; must have competed in an American Athletic Conference-sponsored sport; and must have attained a minimum of senior standing, as determined by the respective institution.
Bombaugh, a two-time USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team selection, boasts a 3.893 cumulative grade-point average in political science.
Currently, Bombaugh ranks first in The American in the weight throw with a toss of 19.07m/62-6.75. He has won two event titles this season, taking first at the Hoosier Open and the Vanderbilt Invitational. The Falmouth, Mass., native compiled the best season of his career in 2012-13, earning outdoor All-America honors in the shot put. At the conference level, he won the shot put and weight throw titles at the BIG EAST indoor championships - the first to accomplish that feat in the league's history - and then went on to capture the hammer throw crown at the league's outdoor championships.
