2011 Fall Learfield Sports Directors' Cup Version 1
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - In the latest release of the Division I Learfield Sports Directors' Cup Standings, which ranks institutions maintaining a broad-based program, achieving success in men's and women's sports, the University of Louisville checked in at No. 17, the Ohio-based organization announced Thursday morning.
With five of the seven fall NCAA championships complete, the Cardinals accumulated 137 points, receiving major contributions from men's soccer's advancing to the Elite Eight and women's soccer's run to the Sweet 16. The two fall championships still remaining are women's volleyball and football (teams are awarded points based a combination of measures, including ranking in the USA Today poll and bowl participation).
The Cardinals are one of six BIG EAST schools currently ranked in the Top 25, with Stanford ranked No. 1. Last year, Louisville placed 21st in the final fall standings.
The Learfield Sports Directors' Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today in 1993-94. Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in up to 20 sports - 10 men's and 10 women's.
The next fall Division I standings will be released on Dec. 22.
