The University of Louisville Athletic Department kicked off the start of another school year with several orientation activities and the annual Welcome Back Dinner on Sunday, August 19 at Papa John's Cardinal Stadium.
LCare (the student-athlete development and life skills department) hosted Student- Athlete Orientation at the PNC Club at Papa John's Cardinal Stadium. The orientation was held for freshman, transfer, and international student-athletes to help inform those new to campus about resources and opportunities, and accelerate their acclimation process.
The orientation program consisted of the student-athletes shuffling between six informational stations describing key elements of campus and athletics- including nutrition, academics, student life and involvement, campus health, PEACC (a campus group which educates and provides services to students around the issues of domestic and dating violence) and urban living and safety.
Anna Grout, the department's Sports Nutritionists, covered dining hall options, meal card plans, and the basics of fueling and refueling your body. Academics explained resources such as the tutoring, the academic center and student-athlete career center.
Campus health and BRICC (Building Resiliency in Campus and Community) came together to cover their services as well engage the student-athletes in an interactive alcohol education exercise. PEACC gave a short introduction to their services as well as discussed Bystander Intervention, the Red Zone, and Take Back the Night.
Urban Living 101 with local police officers covered general safety information about smart living in an urban environment and various campus safety resources such as the escort shuttle and blue lights on campus. Student- Athlete Involvement introduced the freshman to involvement opportunities like SAAC, SCORE, and LIFE and helped them perfect their C-A-R-D-S cheer.
The day's activities continued with the International Center on campus conducting an International Student-Athlete Orientation for all new international student-athletes. Finally, the day concluded with the athletic department's annual Welcome Back Dinner where Will Stein, a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and the Football team, welcomed the entire student-athlete body back from another great year. In addition to Stein, Executive Senior Associate Athletic Director Julie Hermann and Vice President of Athletics Tom Jurich addressed the 800 plus in attendance. The dinner provides a chance for the student-athletes, coaches, and staff to connect and socialize as well as kickoff the start of what will sure to be another great year in Cardinal Athletics.
