The University of Louisville and CardsCARE have paired up with `Friends For Michael' in their efforts to raise money for Spinal Cord Research. With Head Football Coach John L. Smith as the Honorary Chairperson, we are looking forward to BIG rewards in our efforts to help fight the battle against Spinal Cord Injuries, an injury that is all too common in football.
Friends For Michael, Inc., Spinal Cord Injury Organization was founded when Michael Brent, then 18 years old, was injured in a car accident on July 21, 1997 on the way home from working at Valhalla Golf Course. After his car flipped several times crushing the tip, he broke his neck, which resulted in a severed spinal cord, leaving him a quadriplegic. Michael was 18 days from leaving for his first day at Campbellsville University on a golf/academic scholarship. He was a scholar-athlete, graduating with honors from Henry County High School.
A group of Michael's friends decided to have a carwash/bake sale to help raise money for the immediate expenses of the Brent family. Some of those expenses included: buying a van, remodeling of the home for wheel chair accessibility, medical expenses and supplies not covered by insurance, and personal items needed for comfort. This first Friends For Michael fundraiser made over $1600.00! Golf scrambles, hymn sings, tractor pulls, bake sales, raffles, etc. followed and Friends For Michael began to take off.
The efforts have continued to grow year after year, and this year Friends For Michael was excited to join forces with the University of Louisville to help raise funds for the Kentucky Spinal Cord Research Center. The 5th Annual Friends For Michael 5K Run and 1-Mile Fun Run will be held on September 15, 2001 (10:00a.m. at Henry County High School). Anyone interested in joining in on the race, the fees are as follows:
- $20 per runner/walker
- $15 early registration (by September 1, 2001)
