In February of 1998, the L-Club Board of Directors sent a proposal to Director of Athletics, Tom Jurich, for the planned development of a special room inside Papa John's Cardinal Stadium specifically for L-Club members.
The proposal called for a 40' x 40' area located under the east side stands on the main concourse near the predetermined L-Club seating sections. The term of the lease agreement is 10 years and the lease payment for the space was an agreed upon $1, payable each year to the University of Louisville Athletic Association. Partnership rights were signed between UofL and Service America, forging a relationship that would fulfill all catering needs on stadium grounds, including inside the L-Club Room.
Perhaps the most dramatic clause in the proposal was that stating the responsible party of construction planning and costs. The L-Club assumed all responsibility for completing the room's exterior shell as well as all interior improvements and furnishings, including the front and rear walls and the roof. The exterior façade and construction specs were agreed upon in conjunction with the ULAA and the stadium architect.
After final approval came, it was then up to the Board of Directors and then L-Club President Steve Kerrick (baseball) to devise a plan to raise the necessary funds. After months of fundraising, L-Club members had stepped up and contributed almost $100,000 out of their pockets and countless hours to the completion of the L-Club Room.
Five levels of commitment were created for former letterwinners to participate in the campaign. These five levels included built benefits packages commensurate with the level chosen. Benefits included parking passes, membership concessions, CAF points and recognition in the room.
L-Club board member, and former president, Brian Knop (football), has put his time and effort into making sure the L-Club Room is a special place for all Letterwinners to visit. A hand crafted oak bar was built from scratch complete with the vintage L-Club logo engraved. Hundreds of photos adorn the walls of former great athletes who wore the red & black at UofL. These walls of echoes, carefully placed, include players and coaches from all sports. Brian is also responsible for creating the Wall of Fame surrounding the outside walls of the L-Club Room. Walking around the outside of the room, one can easily see all the great UofL Hall of Famers pictured on plaques in honor of their dedication to the university.
Today, the L-Club Room stands as a symbol of dedication and commitment. Without the thousands of dollars donated by the scores of former athletes, the L-Club Room would not have become a reality - Proof that these former athletes can still work as a team to accomplish a common goal.
The room opens on all gamedays two hours prior to kickoff, during halftime and an hour post game. A membership card is required to enter. The room is also used periodically for board meetings, away game watch socials and various other events such as concerts and H.S. All-Star games. It is furnished with bar stools and five TV's for luxury. Come check out your room - we hope to see you in the L-Club Room this season.
