LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville closed out its first season in the BIG EAST Conference in impressive fashion as 130 Cardinal student-athletes were named as BIG EAST Academic All-Stars for the 2005-06 academic year. To be eligible, student-athletes were required to have a minimum 3.0 GPA for the complete academic year and must have earned a varsity letter and participated in a BIG EAST sport.

Leading the way for U of L was the Cards' nationally ranked rowing team with a total of 24 BIG EAST Academic All-Stars, followed closely by the nationally ranked field hockey team with 20 honorees. Along with the impressive results in the classroom, both teams had strong campaigns in their respective competition arenas as the Cardinal rowing program finished the season ranked 20th in the nation, while Louisville field hockey closed its season ranked 12th nationally. Overall, the conference had a total of 2,297 BIG EAST Academic All-Stars among its 16 schools in all sports except football, which is not included in the conference's Academic All-Stars.

Other U of L teams with athletes earning BIG EAST Academic All-Star honors included women's soccer with 12, baseball, men's soccer and softball with nine each, women's swimming & diving with eight, women's tennis with seven, women's track & field and men's tennis with six each, volleyball and women's golf with four each, men's swimming & diving and men's track & field/cross country with three each, and men's basketball, men's golf, and women's basketball with two each.
