University of Louisville Athletic Hall of Fame


Section 1

The Selection Committee shall be composed of (11 members) as selected by the Director of Athletics and will represent the following University constituencies:

  1. Associate Athletic Director for Development
  2. Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Information
  3. Faculty/Staff representative
  4. At-large members
  5. L-Club Board Member
  6. Hall of Fame Historian; Associate Sports Information Director
  7. L-Club Liaison; Athletic Development Coordinator
  8. Alumnus Representative
Section 2

The selection committee shall be comprised of one (1) Committee Chair and one (1) Committee Vice-Chair as elected by the Director of Athletics.

Section 3 The chair shall manage and control the committee's affairs. The chair shall preside at all meetings. The chair is appointed as the liaison between the committee and the Director of Athletics.
Section 4 Each at-large member of the Selection Committee will serve a term of two (2) years with the possibility of reappointment. The committee shall be representative of diversity in the areas of gender, race, sport and era.
Section 5

If an at-large member requests leave from the committee, the Director of Athletics reserves the right to fill that role at his/her discretion.

Article II
Nominations
Section 1 Any alumnus, and/or friend of the University of Louisville may submit the names of nominees to the University of Louisville Athletic Hall of Fame Selection Committee. Nominations must be submitted in writing with proper criteria attached, or on the official Hall of Fame Form.
Section 2

The selection committee will narrow the list of candidates and make recommendations to the Director of Athletics for admission of induction class.

Section 3

The records of the nominees shall be kept on file by the vice chair for further consideration for a period not exceeding three (3) years, after which time they would have to be re-nominated for consideration for induction.

Section 4

Nomination Categories

  1. Athlete
  2. Coach
  3. Athletic Administrator
Section 5 Background information on the nominees shall be verified by the Hall of Fame Historian/Associate sports information director. A brief history and list of accomplishments of each nominee will then be provided to the selection committee.

Article III
Criteria for Inductions

An inductee into the University of Louisville Athletic Hall of Fame must satisfy the qualifications in one of the following three (3) sections:

Section1

Regular Selection - An inductee may be a former University of Louisville athlete who has performed with excellence and lettered in a varsity or intercollegiate sport and whose athletic eligibility has expired ten (10) years prior to nominations. The inductee must have brought significant distinction to him/herself and to the University of Louisville because of successful athletic endeavors. The inductee must be a representative example of Louisville's concept of a dedicated individual who demonstrates high qualities of character and leadership. Inductees must have been enrolled at UofL for a minimum of two (2) years and departed in good academic standing. The inductee may be living or deceased. The inductee must be an individual who attained outstanding athletic accomplishments as a student-athlete and/or beyond the recipient's collegiate career. Examples would include, but are not limited to, the following:

  1. Named an All-American (Academic or Performance-based)
  2. Won an individual national championship
  3. Set a world record
  4. Represented the University of Louisville in the Olympic/Paralympic Games
  5. Led the nation or conference in a recognized statistical category
  6. Ed Kallay Award Recipient
Section 2 Former Coaches - An inductee may be a former University of Louisville coach who has successfully distinguished him/herself by demonstrating exceptional leadership, character, and athletic expertise. The inductee must have coached a varsity or intercollegiate sport. A period of five (5) years must have passed since the coach ended his/her career. The five year waiting period can be waived if the coach ends his/her career with the University of Louisville athletic program. The inductee may be living or deceased.
Section 3

Administrators - An inductee may be a former University of Louisville athletic department administrator who has successfully distinguished him/herself by demonstrating exceptional leadership and character. The inductee must have shown great loyalty to the university and Louisville community. He/she must have demonstrated a passion for success of Louisville Athletics while providing a vision for the future. A period of five (5) years must have passed since the administrator ended his/her career. The five year waiting period can be waived if the administrator ends his/her career with the University of Louisville athletic program.

Article IV
Election of Inductees

Section 1 A maximum of six (6) regular inductees may be selected each year by the Selection Committee.
Section 2 Selection of the Hall of Fame Class shall require a minimum vote (8 of 11) for each nominee by the selection committee for induction. In order for a nominee to be selected, he/she must receive at least a majority vote of the committee members present. All voting shall be done with secret ballots. Tallying of ballots will be done by Chair and Vice-Chair of committee.
Section 3 Following the initial inductee voting, if no inductee is representative of women's athletics the committee will reconsider all nominees. One inductee will be added if she meets the majority on the ensuing vote. Female coaches, male or female, are eligible under this category and can fulfill this requirement if he/she has met the required criteria for induction.

Article V
Induction of New Members

Section 1 New members of the University of Louisville Athletic Hall of Fame shall be inducted at an appropriate dinner. The dinner will be held at a location determined by the Director of Athletics on a pre-determined date.
Section 2 The induction ceremony will be planned and organized by the Chair of the selection committee with special appointments made by the Director of Athletics.

Article VI
Meetings

Section 1 The Selection Committee shall conduct regular meetings leading up to the induction to properly select the nominated candidates and plan the ceremony.
Section 2 Special meetings may be scheduled at the discretion of the chair.

Article VII
Amendments

These bylaws may be amended by two-thirds vote of the members of the Selection Committee at a regular meeting.
