The U of L Co-ed cheerleaders won their 14th National Championship at the NCA/NDA National Championships Friday, in Daytona Beach, Fla. Wins for the All-Girl and the Small Co-Ed made it a sweep for the Cardinals.
All four squads compete at the highest level, Cheer Division IA/I.
"All four squads captured the national championship for their division in Daytona Beach today. This is the first program in history to sweep all four competitions," said U of L assistant athletic director Alicia Clark, who administers the spirit groups. "This accomplishment is even more noteworthy given the hectic schedule of the squads over the past month with constant traveling with the men's and women's basketball teams to the BIG EAST and NCAAs. Indeed, the squads practiced until midnight several evenings in St. Louis, and bused straight from St. Louis' Women's Final Four to Daytona to compete."
Almost 5,000 student athletes and 15,000 supporters and spectators convene each year for the competition with seven Dance Divisions and eleven Cheer Divisions separate teams by designation of All-Girl or Coed, skill level, university enrollment (Division 1, 1A, or II), Junior College, or International. Championship winners are also awarded for Partner Stunts, Group Stunts, and Mascot at Stunt Fest Mania on Saturday.
"Kudos to Coordinator/Head Coach Todd Sharp, James Speed, Misty Hodges, and Sheryl Knight and of course to all the kids for a spectacular achievement. They have once again represented the University of Louisville at the highest level,"
