The University of Louisville Athletics Department has launched a department-wide slogan, "Louisville First, Cards Forever," a campaign that was unveiled on March 1.
Louisville is home to one of the most successful intercollegiate athletics programs in the nation. The Cardinals boast a number of team and individual national championships, 48 BIG EAST team titles (combined regular season and tournament) since joining the league in 2005 and more than 300 All-America honorees.
The success of Louisville's teams contributes to a sense of pride in the community across the nation and throughout the Commonwealth. The Cardinal logo embodies the passion the fans have for the University with the hope that the slogan becomes synonymous with the University and Cardinal athletics.
The department has produced state-wide billboards, merchandise, social media components, as well, as print, radio and television ads to promote this unified message. It builds off a message from men's basketball head coach Rick Pitino, who stated that he expects his team to play for the name on the front of the jersey, and not be concerned about the name on the back.
"The pride we have in our University goes beyond the championships and embodies the commitment we have made to all of our student-athletes and fans," said Vice President/Director of Athletics Tom Jurich. "Our student-athletes want to play for the name on the front of the jersey, and our fans are loyal Cardinal followers. We are so proud of our student-athletes for what they have accomplished on and off the field. They have represented this University with class and dignity."
Fans are encouraged to use the slogan - "Louisville First, Cards Forever" and #L1C4 (Twitter hashtag) - and logos on all their social media platforms.
