Thirty-six Cardinal student-athlete's had a unique leadership development opportunity this week as part of the athletic department's LCare program. TEAM ONE and Team Elite, the women's and men's student-athlete leadership groups, attended Yum! University for their Achieving Breakthrough Results leadership training with facilitator Justin Patton.

The interactive workshop focused on key elements of leadership and strategies utilized at Yum! to cultivate people as motivators and innovators. The student-athletes were challenged to think boldly and creatively, while staying true to their core values. They practiced building "ching" (Yum!'s term for cultivating relationships) with each other and learned how to do this with teammates. The session consisted of introducing the student-athletes to seven different leadership and communication tools and techniques for them to better their thinking, intentionality and action to get results. One tool for example, was Future Back Thinking. On average, 80 percent of our time spent thinking is thinking about the past, 15 percent about the present and only five percent about the future. The student-athletes were challenged to think with the overall future goal in mind first, then break down the idea and work backwards so it can be achieved in the present.

Becca Maddock, a sophomore leader on the field hockey team summed of her experience: "The Yum! Brand leadership series opened my eyes to a completely new aspect regarding leadership. It was very interactive and taught me that being a leader is not just about working hard or leading by example; rather it also includes getting to know your teammates on an individual level and encouraging them with what you have learned about them to be the best that they can be. Justin lead the series in a way that showed us some very simple and immediate changes we can make to become better leaders on and off the field. I would highly recommend it to anyone who gets the opportunity to attend it in the future!"

"Yum! Brands gave us an interesting and exciting talk on how to set goals, inspire others, and always take the next step in being a leader. The best part was that it can be applied to our sport, our future careers and life in general," commented Kevin Bandy, a senior on the swimming and diving team.
